Location: Hampden and Buckley, Aurora
I’d like to welcome you to Bank’s House! As one of the original houses of Aurora Sober Living, those of us who are lucky enough to call it “home”, know how blessed we are, appreciate the opportunities we have been presented with, and fully embrace the responsibility that comes with this dwelling. Even though our ranks are comprised of men, both young and old, we come together with the sole purpose of building and providing a safe and comfortable haven for the tired and weary. Whether it’s one of the younger gentlemen’s first experiences, or one of the older “veterans” 2nd or 3rd trips, we all commit to the understanding of the word “community”, and the idea of “Brotherhood”.
As men, many of us were taught or grew up under the yoke of never showing weakness, or asking for help. It’s a hard way to grow up and live, and in-turn it can build hard individuals. Its sad to say that many still feel that is the only way they can operate, or the only way there is to live. Many walk through these doors, not knowing what to expect, or how to make it facing the daunting task of surviving and thriving in a house of “hardened, beaten down” men. I take great pride in being able to dispel any of those ridiculous notions, and in making any effort possible to make someone feel welcome. We share ideas, make meals, and argue over sporting events like a family would; and that is the whole point! Life is hard enough, the world can be a lonely place, but here we take every stride we can so that everyone knows they are safe here, they have brothers here, and are never alone.
This isn’t a “forever” home. Everyone who crosses that threshold is tasked with leaving here a “more complete” person than the one they arrived as.
Whether it be from working a program, working a job, volunteering, step work, or community service, every single person is held accountable to themselves, and indirectly to the gentlemen they share a home with, to make everyday better than the one before.
Someone may be here for a few months, or a few years, but those who have been able to lay their heads down here know that inside of these walls, they are safe, fed, protected, and re-energized to go back out into the world and be better.
And more importantly they can come back here at the end of a hard tough day, sit down to talk to someone, and that that someone will actually know what they are talking about because they have been there, really been there, and can relate.
And with that, this house and this program assure that the world will be just a little bit better, because of the opportunities so many of us have been presented with, and the loving effort put forth by the amazing women who have offered this chance, (1st, 2nd, or 10th), to be the person we were born to be.
